In Germany more than 300,000 people contract sepsis every year - the most severe form of infection. Popularly known as "blood poisoning" it is one of the most frequent causes of death in Germany. Symptoms are often non-specific at the onset of the disease. Therefore, early and adequate treatment of sepsis is an interdisciplinary challenge. 50 to 60 percent of patients survive the disease, but may suffer from significant and often chronic physical, mental and psychological impairments. Until now, there has been no structured treatment and after-care concept for these patients.

In AVENIR, care pathways of sepsis patients will be traced based on data collected in the health care system. In addition, qualitative interviews are conducted with sepsis survivors and their relatives as well as caregivers. The objective is to identify needs and potential for optimization through a comprehensive analysis of care pathways and experience reports. The results form the basis for the development of information and education materials, through which care structures are to be improved in the long term.
